Arcadians Face $1.9M Battle to Save Miner's Lamp Theatre

The Arcadians Theatre Group is fighting to keep the Miner's Lamp Theatre in Corrimal open, facing a $1.9 million challenge for essential fire safety and compliance upgrades. The 70-year-old theatre requires significant work to meet current regulations, and the group's president, Steven Sanders, has described the venue as extremely important to the community.

According to Sanders, there are few affordable live theatre spaces in Wollongong. The Miner's Lamp serves not only for performances but also hosts the Lamplighter Male Choir and the Arcadian Children's Theatre, which rehearses weekly and presents two major shows annually. The Arcadians have staged 351 productions in Wollongong, with three or four major shows each year from their senior cast.

The group purchased the building from Wollongong City Council in 1997. However, in 2022, they discovered it lacked approval to operate as a place of public entertainment. Legal advice was sought, and a development application was submitted to council, which was finalized in May 2025. Since then, architects and engineers have been engaged to design upgrades to meet the National Building Code.

Sanders noted that a quote for the full scope of work was received only recently, and the group is now working toward funding the renovations. The Arcadians are seeking community support through their website, GoFundMe, and PayPal, but Sanders acknowledged that larger commercial contributions are needed. The more donations received, the less the group will have to borrow, allowing work to proceed faster.

Once renovations begin, the theatre may need to close temporarily, but the group is determined to preserve the venue. Sanders emphasized that alternatives are costly and lack the resources and facilities the Miner's Lamp provides, underscoring the theatre's value to the local performing arts scene.
