Sydney Drivers Rush for Cheapest Fuel in Five Years

Drivers across Sydney are rushing to petrol stations to take advantage of the cheapest fuel prices in five years, with unleaded averaging just $1.52 a litre across the city.

Fuel Frenzy Before Excise Hike

The fuel frenzy comes ahead of Wednesday's fuel excise increase, which will see prices rise by about 16 cents a litre when the partial excise cut ends. Service stations have been packed all weekend as drivers scramble to fill their tanks before the price jump hits. Some stations are offering even better deals, with unleaded selling for as low as $1.38 a litre at Croydon Park.

Lowest Prices Since Pandemic

The current Sydney-wide average of $1.52 a litre hasn't been seen since the pandemic lockdowns of 2021, making it a significant saving for motorists. Diesel prices are also sitting low, averaging $1.73 a litre on Monday.

ACCC Monitoring for Price Gouging

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has written to all major fuel chains, warning it will be closely monitoring for any evidence of price gouging when the excise increase takes effect on Wednesday. Industry experts are urging drivers to fill up before then to maximise their savings before the inevitable price rise.
