British military forces have intercepted a vessel believed to be part of Russia's shadow fleet in the English Channel, according to a video released by the Ministry of Defence. The operation, which took place on Monday, involved the Royal Navy and RAF aircraft tracking the ship suspected of carrying illicit cargo.
Details of the Interception
The vessel, identified as a cargo ship sailing under a foreign flag, was shadowed by HMS Tyne and a Merlin helicopter from 814 Naval Air Squadron. The Royal Navy frigate conducted a boarding operation to inspect the ship's cargo and documents. Defence sources said the ship is part of a network of vessels used by Russia to evade sanctions and transport oil and military equipment.
Rising Tensions
The interception comes as tensions between the UK and Russia remain high due to the war in Ukraine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to crack down on Russia's shadow fleet, which he says undermines global security and sanctions regimes. The UK has previously imposed sanctions on several ships and entities linked to the fleet.
In a statement, Defence Secretary John Healey said: "This operation sends a clear message that the UK will not tolerate attempts to circumvent international sanctions. We will continue to work with our allies to disrupt these illegal activities."
International Response
The Russian government has not yet commented on the interception. However, analysts say such operations are likely to increase as Western nations seek to enforce sanctions more aggressively. The shadow fleet has been a key tool for Russia to maintain oil exports and fund its war effort.
The UK's actions align with broader European efforts to target the fleet, with several EU countries recently conducting similar boardings in the North Sea and Baltic.
