Resident Confronts Neo-Nazi Distributing Racist Flyers

A Canberra resident has captured images of a neo-Nazi openly distributing 'White Australia' leaflets in the Tuggeranong suburb of Greenway. The local, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed disgust that such racism was occurring openly in the city.

The resident encountered the man while returning home from work and engaged him in a brief conversation. 'He said they were for 'white Australia' and some organisation about 'advancing and preserving white Australians',' the resident reported to The Canberra Times.

Pattern of Hateful Propaganda Emerges

This incident marks the second time in two months that Canberrans have complained about finding these offensive leaflets in their letterboxes. The flyers feature symbols linked to a political party formed by known neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell, who is currently facing charges for allegedly attacking a First Nations protest site in Melbourne.

The content specifically complains about non-European immigrants and claims Australia is becoming 'less white and more brown'. A previous batch distributed in north Canberra during March contained messages urging people to 'fight for your race'.

In a separate incident earlier this year, a Mawson resident described similar leaflets as 'deeply offensive', emphasising that 'racism has no place in Canberra or Australia'.

Police Response and Community Backlash

ACT Policing confirmed awareness of all three leafleting incidents but stated they haven't identified any criminal offences related to the content or symbols used. An ACT Policing spokeswoman acknowledged the material was 'objectionable' in a modern inclusive society but noted distribution itself doesn't constitute a crime.

'ACT Policing will always assess this type of material and will not hesitate to investigate when criminality is identified,' the spokeswoman stated. Police have encouraged anyone with information about the creation or distribution of such flyers to contact Crime Stoppers.

This isn't the first instance of hate symbols appearing in Canberra. The community has previously responded to such messaging by distributing inclusive counter-flyers. Other recent incidents include:

  • A Buddhist temple in Nicholls being targeted with Nazi swastika graffiti in March
  • Three teenagers charged in August for drawing Nazi symbols in a Tuggeranong shopping centre bathroom
  • A Gungahlin man arrested after AFP found a photo of him performing the Nazi salute

Since 2023, investigators have laid six charges across three separate racial vilification incidents.

The Greenway resident who photographed the latest leafleting insisted that politicians need to take action against these groups and their propaganda materials.
