Five teenagers have been arrested after a group of drunken youths allegedly subjected Jewish primary school children to anti-Semitic abuse and threats on a Sydney school bus. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon as the bus traveled from Maroubra to Bondi Beach.
Parents of the 25 children on board reported receiving frantic calls from their kids, who were terrified by the group's behaviour. One mother, Jackie Blackburn, described hearing her daughter plead for help as the teenagers shouted threats including 'Heil Hitler' and 'Palestine must kill the Jews'.
New South Wales Police arrested five of the six alleged offenders after reviewing CCTV footage. Superintendent Jason Box said the teenagers, aged 15 to 17, were released into their parents' custody due to intoxication and will be questioned later. Police are urging the sixth suspect to surrender.
The bus was a State Transit Authority service not restricted to any specific school. Police believe the driver allowed the teenagers on board because they had bus passes and were in partial school uniform. Authorities are investigating how the group accessed the bus.
The attack has deeply disturbed the Jewish community. Vic Alhadeff of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies linked the incident to the Middle East conflict, noting a pattern of increased anti-Semitism during such tensions. He condemned the use of global events as a pretext for local racism.
