Khanna Defends Platner Amid Misconduct Allegations

Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna voiced a qualified defense of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner on Sunday, acknowledging that while Platner's past actions were "shameful" and "misogynistic," he believes the candidate has taken accountability and deserves a chance at redemption. Platner, a former Marine and oyster farmer, is challenging Republican incumbent Susan Collins in November's election.

Allegations Against Platner

Platner has faced multiple allegations, including sending sexually explicit messages while married and having a Nazi-themed tattoo. His ex-girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, told the New York Times that Platner grabbed her by the shoulders, yanked her out of a cab, and twisted her arm behind her back. Platner has denied physical abuse and claimed he was unaware of the tattoo's meaning, attributing his behavior to undiagnosed PTSD and alcohol abuse.

Khanna's Stance

On CBS's Face the Nation, Khanna stated he supports Platner because "he took accountability" and is running on progressive policies like national health insurance and taxing billionaires. Khanna noted that Maine voters were aware of Platner's troubled past and are willing to extend grace. However, Khanna urged Platner's campaign to stop attacking Fifield, saying, "I believe her," and commended her courage.

Khanna added that if any evidence of domestic violence or assault emerges, he would have "zero tolerance." The primary election is two days away, and the race has become a referendum on Platner's character rather than Collins's record.
