Roy Orbison's Music and Story Brought to Life in Vivid Detail at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre

This April, the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (IPAC) will host a spectacular celebration of the life and music of the legendary Roy Orbison. Mark Shelley and his talented band are set to deliver a stunning and believable performance that masterfully blends Orbison's timeless hits with engaging, heartfelt, and often humorous anecdotes from his remarkable journey.

A Theatre Show That Captures the Essence of The Big O

Mark Shelley, who cuts a striking figure in the role, describes the production as The Roy Orbison Story, emphasizing its focus on Orbison's life narrative. "It's a theatre show based on Roy Orbison's life, highlighting more than 20 of his hit songs and also taking the audience on a journey through aspects of his life," Mark explained. The two-hour performance features all of Orbison's biggest hits, including iconic tracks like 'Only the Lonely,' 'In Dreams,' 'Crying,' 'Pretty Woman,' and 'Working for the Man,' ensuring a nostalgic and immersive experience for fans.

Dispelling Myths and Revealing the Real Roy Orbison

Known for his highly emotional ballads and distinctive black clothing and sunglasses, Roy Orbison was often portrayed as a dark and brooding figure. However, Mark Shelley aims to challenge this perception through his detailed characterisation. "He was often portrayed as a man of darkness and sorrow, and while he did have tragedy in his life, he was an entertaining and funny man," Mark noted. To achieve this authentic portrayal, he has invested countless hours studying performances and interviews, meticulously capturing Orbison's unique vocal inflections and nuances.

"I am thankful that I naturally have the vocal range and similar tone," Mark said. "But I've also put a huge amount of time into capturing his little vocal inflections and nuances. I've watched countless hours of interviews and concerts, so it's thoroughly researched."

A Totally Live Concert Theatre Experience

Backed by a stellar seven-piece band comprised of some of Australia's finest musicians, Mark Shelley ensures that every moment of the show is genuine and dynamic. "Everything is live. There's absolutely nothing that's taped, nothing pre-recorded. It's a totally live concert theatre experience," he emphasized. This commitment to live performance enhances the authenticity and energy of the production, allowing audiences to connect deeply with Orbison's music and story.
