Charlie Kirk Becomes Punchline: Memes Erode Far-Right Icon's Legacy Online
Charlie Kirk Memes Erode Far-Right Icon's Legacy Online

Ten months after his assassination, Charlie Kirk's name and likeness remain prolific online—but not as the far-right activist would have wanted. Instead, crude memes and ironic posts have turned him into a punchline, marking a dramatic shift from the period of enforced reverence immediately following his death.

From Reverence to Ridicule

Audio of the gunshot that killed Kirk has become a TikTok meme, alongside ironic reposts of the AI-generated tribute song 'We Are Charlie Kirk.' He was the butt of a joke during Netflix's roast of Kevin Hart in May, and a viral tweet encouraged people to take 'a shot' in his honor on Juneteenth. A trend called 'Kirkification' involves superimposing his face onto unlikely images, such as the Mona Lisa or Jeffrey Epstein.

This contemptuous humor contrasts sharply with the period after Kirk's death in September, when conservatives sought to suppress criticism. Hundreds were fired or disciplined for denouncing him, leading to settlements over alleged First Amendment violations. The attempted censorship intensified the satire, said Alex Turvy, a media sociologist. 'When you mandate reverence on a medium built for irony, you don't freeze the image, you load the spring,' he explained.

Legacy Under Threat

The meme-ification threatens to upend Kirk's carefully cultivated legacy and distract from the prosecution of alleged shooter Tyler Robinson. Preliminary hearings began in Provo, Utah, this week, with prosecutors showing graphic videos of Kirk's final moments. Robinson has not entered a plea.

The online noise also highlights Turning Point USA's struggle to retain influence since Kirk's death, even with his widow Erika at the helm. 'The jokes about Charlie Kirk are symbolic of seismic shifts within online culture,' said Eviane Leidig, director of research at the Center for the Study of Organized Hate. 'After his passing, there was a power vacuum for the next big voice for young conservatives.' Figures like Candace Owens and white nationalist Nick Fuentes have jockeyed for clout.

Leidig noted that Kirk has fallen out of favor with younger conservatives, a shift that began while he was alive. 'A lot of young people look at his legacy and think it's cringe. It's not cool anymore.'

Kirk's Online Origins

At his peak, Kirk was MAGA's youth whisperer, generating viral clips that extended the Republican Party's reach. His comments were often incendiary, such as claiming 'prowling Blacks' target white people. He traveled the country challenging college students to debates, designed not for dialogue but for viral content, said Jamie Cohen, associate professor at CUNY Queens College. Kirk was a 'media martyr,' appealing to young men who saw him as a 'truthsayer,' though Cohen argued 'he was making it up for clicks and views.'

Robinson, the alleged shooter, was also deeply online, etching obscure internet phrases onto bullets. Both emerged from 'the same warped online worlds,' as The New Yorker noted.

Digital Ecosystems Struggle

After the shooting, online forums flooded with conspiracy theories, tributes, attacks, and mockery. Turvy said there were different framings—a casualty, a free-speech martyr, a victim of his own rhetoric. 'What's different now is that online everyone has a roughly equal-sized megaphone. Every camp can reach for the meaning of his death, and none can make theirs stick. The memes fill the space where settled meaning used to go.'

Turvy added that tragedies used to take years to become fodder for cynical humor, but generative AI accelerated Kirk's meme-ification in weeks. 'Ultimately, a 31-year-old was shot in the neck in public. There's a real widow and two real kids.'

Turning Point's Struggle

After the assassination, Turning Point USA saw a surge in visibility. The Senate established a National Day of Remembrance, and Erika Kirk spoke at his funeral before millions. But that visibility has receded, especially among youth. 'They're dealing with the fact that Turning Point is no longer a countercultural movement,' Leidig said. Some young conservatives see its ties to MAGA as 'a sell-out to the establishment, and thus cringe.'

Erika Kirk is in an awkward position, having promoted traditional gender roles while now leading a multimillion-dollar organization. She has been memed for her quick return to public life, demonstrating Turning Point's struggle to control the narrative. Without broad buy-in, the group is weakened. Under Charlie, it used a top-down approach with cohesive strategy and funding; now, amorphous groups like Fuentes's Groypers have ascended.

Robinson's expected trial, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty, may give Kirk's supporters a chance to reshape discourse. As it stands, his legacy may be doomed to meme-ification.
