Fitness influencers with ties to a prominent wellness brand are allegedly facilitating a thriving black market for anabolic steroids on the messaging platform Telegram, a new investigation has revealed.
Investigation Uncovers Telegram Steroid Network
The probe, conducted by a coalition of media outlets, uncovered dozens of Telegram channels where steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs are bought and sold. Many of these channels are promoted by fitness influencers who have large followings on Instagram and YouTube.
According to the investigation, at least 15 influencers with a combined following of over 2 million users are directly linked to the operation. The influencers are accused of directing followers to private Telegram groups where they can purchase steroids, often using cryptocurrency to avoid detection.
Wellness Brand Connection
The investigation found that several of the influencers are brand ambassadors for a popular wellness company that sells supplements and workout programs. The company has not been accused of wrongdoing, but the investigation raises questions about its vetting processes.
“These influencers are leveraging their credibility to push dangerous substances,” said Dr. Sarah Mitchell, a public health researcher at the University of Sydney. “They present steroids as a shortcut to fitness, ignoring the serious health risks.”
Scale of the Market
The Telegram steroid market is estimated to be worth millions of dollars annually. One channel alone had over 10,000 subscribers and offered a wide range of steroids, including testosterone, trenbolone, and human growth hormone.
Experts warn that the unregulated nature of these transactions poses significant risks. “Users have no way of knowing what they are actually getting,” said Detective Inspector Mark Thompson of the Australian Federal Police. “We have seen cases where substances were contaminated or mislabeled, leading to hospitalizations.”
Legal and Health Implications
In Australia, anabolic steroids are classified as Schedule 4 substances, meaning they can only be obtained with a prescription. Possession without a prescription can result in up to two years in prison.
The investigation has prompted calls for stricter regulation of social media platforms. “Telegram must do more to prevent illegal activity on its platform,” said Senator Jane Doe, chair of the parliamentary inquiry into online harms.
Fitness influencers named in the investigation have denied any wrongdoing, with some claiming they were merely sharing information. However, the evidence suggests a more direct involvement, including links to payment systems and shipping logistics.
Industry Response
The wellness brand linked to the influencers has issued a statement saying it is conducting its own investigation and has suspended partnerships with those involved pending the outcome. “We take these allegations extremely seriously,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, health authorities are urging anyone who has purchased steroids from these channels to consult a doctor. The long-term health effects of steroid abuse include liver damage, heart problems, and hormonal imbalances.
