The Helensburgh-Stanwell Park surf life saving club is in mourning after the passing of beloved member Kurt Drysdale, who died following a two-week battle with pneumonia. The 29-year-old, who joined the club in 2012, was remembered for his unwavering spirit and dedication to his community.
A Life of Resilience and Community Spirit
In 2015, Drysdale suffered a life-changing spinal injury while playing rugby league for the Cabramatta Two Blues, leaving him quadriplegic at the age of 20. Despite this immense challenge, his love for sport and his community never wavered. "His courage, determination, and kindness left a lasting mark on our community," the club stated in a heartfelt Facebook post. "His resilience continued to inspire all who knew him."
The post further emphasized Drysdale's legacy, noting that he brought people together through compassion, perseverance, and unity. The club extended its deepest condolences to his family and friends, affirming that his spirit will forever remain a part of their organization.
Tributes from the NRL Community and Close Friends
Drysdale's story deeply resonated within the NRL community, particularly touching former Eels star Shaun Lane, a high school friend. In 2022, on the eve of the premiership grand final, Lane made a poignant vow: "The next time I visit him, I'm going with a premiership ring. Kurt can have selfies with the ring, that's the plan."
Following Drysdale's passing, Lane offered a moving tribute to the media, describing him as a "genuinely beautiful human" who was fun-loving, caring, and kind. "Wherever Kurt went, joy and laughter would follow," Lane told the Daily Mail. "Even in the aftermath of his accident, which would have broken so many others, he remained playful, compassionate and was always smiling."
Lane praised Drysdale's bravery and resilience, stating he was as tough as anyone he had ever met and kept fighting through adversity. He expressed gratitude for their 20-year friendship and the cherished memories they shared, concluding with a heartfelt message: "I will miss my mate."
The Cronulla Sharks also paid tribute to Drysdale, honoring him as a beloved junior club member. His impact extended beyond the surf life saving club, touching various sporting communities across the Illawarra region.
