Alex de Minaur's Spanish Connection Fuels Barcelona Open Ambitions
De Minaur's Spanish Roots Boost Barcelona Open Hopes

Alex de Minaur, with a Spanish mother and a childhood spent in Spain, feels a natural affinity for the red clay courts of the Iberian nation. This connection was evident as he received warm support from the local crowd during his opening-round victory at the Barcelona Open on Tuesday.

De Minaur's Strong Start in Barcelona

The Australian No.1 defeated Austria's Sebastian Ofner in straight sets, 7-6 (9-7) 6-4, showcasing his comfort on the surface. Despite his popularity and fluency in Spanish, de Minaur has yet to reach a final in either Madrid or Barcelona, with a 2022 semi-final in Barcelona marking his best performance to date.

Seeded third in Catalonia, de Minaur displayed promise in his win over the 86th-ranked qualifier, suggesting he could at least match that semi-final run this year. However, if the tournament follows seeding, he would face a formidable challenge in world No.2 Carlos Alcaraz, who has defeated de Minaur in all six of their previous meetings, including matches in Barcelona in 2022 and 2025.

Challenges Ahead for the Australian Star

First, de Minaur must overcome another qualifier, Hamad Nedjedovic, the 88th-ranked Serb he previously beat at the Australian Open this year. A win would set up a match against either Portugal's Nuno Borges or Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

In his match against Ofner, de Minaur faced a brief scare with a break point in the eighth game but saved it with a precise and powerful backhand down the line. After securing a lengthy tie-break, he took control with an early break in the second set to seal the victory.

Other Results from the Barcelona Open

Elsewhere in the tournament, fourth seed Karen Khachanov was less resilient, falling 6-3 6-4 to Argentina's world No.64 Camilo Ugo Carabelli. In contrast, second seed Lorenzo Musetti advanced with a 7-5 6-2 win over wildcard Martin Landaluce.

Fifth seed Andrey Rublev defeated Mariano Navone 6-4 7-5 and will next face Lorenzo Sonego, who overcame qualifier Pedro Martinez 6-2 2-6 6-4. Other players progressing include Brandon Nakashima and Arthur Fils.

Munich Open Updates

In Germany, defending champion Alexander Zverev battled hard to secure a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-2) victory over Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round of the Munich Open. Zverev, who needed two hours and 18 minutes to prevail, commented on the cool weather creating slow conditions that made it difficult to hit winners.

World No.3 Zverev, aiming for a record fourth title in Munich, will next face Canada's Gabriel Diallo. However, third seed Alexander Bublik was surprised by qualifier Alex Molcan 6-4 6-2, and No.8 seed Tallon Griekspoor was upset by Denis Shapovalov 6-4 3-6 6-2.

Additional winners in Munich include Flavio Cobolli, Daniel Altmaier, Luciano Darderi, Zizou Bergs, Vit Kopriva, and Joao Fonseca. Notably, no Australian players are competing in the Munich Open this year.
