Rob Burrow's Father Geoff Dies, Second Family Tragedy

The Burrow family, already grieving the loss of rugby league icon Rob Burrow, has been struck by a second heartbreaking tragedy in just two years with the passing of his father, Geoff Burrow. Leeds Rhinos announced the sad news, revealing Geoff died on Monday, March 30th, following a period of ill health.

A Devoted Father and Tireless Campaigner

Geoff Burrow was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who played a pivotal role in fostering his son Rob's lifelong passion for the Leeds Rhinos. He brought Rob to his first game at Headingley, sparking a love that would define the younger Burrow's celebrated career.

Following Rob's diagnosis with motor neuron disease in 2019, Geoff became a tireless and vocal advocate for the MND community. He continued this crucial work even after Rob lost his five-year battle with the disease in 2024, demonstrating unwavering dedication to the cause.

Leeds Rhinos Pays Tribute

In an official statement, Leeds Rhinos expressed deep sadness and extended heartfelt condolences to Geoff's wife, Irene, and the entire Burrow family. The club highlighted Geoff's lifelong commitment as a trade union representative, where he consistently championed those without a voice.

"The club would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Geoff's wife Irene and the Burrow family at this sad time," the statement read. "We would like to ask that the family are given privacy at this time. May he rest in peace."

Legacy of a Rugby League Family

Rob Burrow's legendary career with the Leeds Rhinos spanned 17 years, featuring an impressive 492 club games. He also earned representative honors, playing two games for Yorkshire, 13 for England, and five for Great Britain. His father Geoff was a constant and supportive presence throughout this journey.

Leeds CEO Jamie Jones-Buchanan, a former Rhinos player, paid a moving tribute to Geoff's enduring legacy. "He loved rugby league. He loved what Rob did and he was part of the team, always will be," Jones-Buchanan said. "He'll always be part of our history, our heritage."

Instrumental in Building a Lasting Legacy

Geoff Burrow's advocacy extended to tangible projects aimed at supporting the MND community. As recently as November, he was present for the opening of the £6 million Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds.

At the opening, Geoff emphasized the centre's importance, stating, "This centre is not just for MND sufferers and their families, but for all the staff. The staff are marvellous, they're angels."

Craig Richardson, Director of Estates and Facilities at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, confirmed Geoff played a fundamental role in the centre's development. "Geoff played a huge role in the development of the new Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease," Richardson said.

"He came to every stakeholder and development meeting over the two years, and he championed all the work taking place to build the centre. He had so much energy and enthusiasm to help create a legacy for Rob and support the MND community."

The passing of Geoff Burrow marks a profound loss for his family, the rugby league community, and the many individuals he supported through his advocacy work. His dedication to honoring his son's memory and fighting motor neuron disease leaves a powerful and lasting impact.
