Former rugby league and union star Wendell Sailor has been granted bail following an alleged drunken incident in Wollongong that led to charges of resisting arrest and obstructing traffic.
Details of the Alleged Incident on Throsby Drive
Police were called to Throsby Drive in Wollongong around 11pm on Friday after receiving reports of a man disrupting the flow of vehicles. Officers from the Wollongong Police District attended the scene and found the 51-year-old former athlete on the road.
Upon conducting checks, police allege that Sailor was in breach of existing bail conditions. He was subsequently arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station for processing.
Charges Laid and Bail Refusal
The sporting great was formally charged with three offences: breach of bail, obstructing traffic, and resist arrest. He was initially refused bail and was scheduled to appear before Bail Court 3 on Saturday, 6 December 2025.
However, following that court appearance, Sailor was released on bail. Police have confirmed that no one was injured during the alleged incident or the arrest process.
A Decorated Sporting Career
Wendell Sailor is one of Australia's most recognisable dual-code rugby stars. He enjoyed a celebrated rugby league career with the Brisbane Broncos, playing 189 games for the club during its dominant era.
He later switched codes to rugby union, earning selection for the national team, the Wallabies. Sailor represented Australia in union between 2002 and 2005, solidifying his status as a formidable athlete in both sports.
The matter remains before the court, with further updates expected as legal proceedings continue.
