Newcastle Knights prop Trey Mooney has opened up about the dramatic match-winning try he scored against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, describing it as a dream come true. The 22-year-old forward crossed the line in the dying minutes of the game, securing a hard-fought 24-22 victory for his side at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Mooney's Moment of Glory
Speaking after the match, Mooney expressed his elation at being able to contribute to the team's success. "It was an incredible feeling to get that try and help the boys get the win," he said. "We've been working really hard at training, and to see it pay off in such a big moment is special."
The try came from a well-executed play, with Mooney charging onto a short ball from halfback Jackson Hastings. He powered through the Rabbitohs' defence to plant the ball down, igniting celebrations among teammates and fans alike.
Team Effort Key to Victory
Mooney was quick to praise his teammates for their role in the victory. "It was a real team effort out there," he noted. "The forwards did a great job laying the platform, and the backs were dangerous every time they got the ball. We knew it was going to be a tough game against Souths, but we stuck to our game plan and it worked."
The Knights had trailed for much of the contest, but a strong second-half performance saw them claw their way back into the match. Mooney's try was the culmination of a period of sustained pressure, and he acknowledged the importance of staying composed under pressure.
Personal Pride and Future Goals
For Mooney, the try was not just a personal highlight but also a testament to his development as a player. "I've been working on my game and trying to add more to my attacking game," he explained. "To see that work come off in a game is really pleasing. I just want to keep improving and helping the team win."
The victory moved the Knights up the NRL ladder, and Mooney is optimistic about the remainder of the season. "We're building some good momentum now," he said. "We just need to keep working hard and taking it one game at a time. If we do that, we can achieve something special this year."
Knights coach Adam O'Brien also praised Mooney's performance, highlighting his work ethic and physicality. "Trey is a young player with a lot of potential," O'Brien said. "He's been working hard on his game, and it's great to see him get the rewards. That try was a result of his determination and willingness to put his body on the line."
The Knights will now turn their attention to next week's clash against the Parramatta Eels, with Mooney eager to build on his performance. "We've got a big game coming up, and we'll be ready for it," he concluded. "We're confident in our ability to compete with anyone."
