Raiders Fullback Admits 'Very Silly Error' After Court Appearance
Canberra Raiders young gun Chevy Stewart has publicly addressed his recent court appearance, describing the incident where he poured beer on a poker machine as a "very silly error." The 20-year-old fullback spent the summer navigating the New South Wales court system following the September event in Cronulla, ultimately avoiding a conviction but receiving a one-year conditional release order in January.
Moving Past Frustration to Focus on NRL Career
In his first interview with The Canberra Times, Stewart expressed frustration over the legal proceedings but emphasized his determination to put it all behind him. "It's been a bit frustrating with all that stuff," Stewart said. "Obviously a very silly error of mine and I've gone through it all now. So it's all done and dusted. We can move on from that."
Stewart, who has played four NRL games since his 2024 debut against the Gold Coast Titans, revealed he explored options with other clubs last year after being granted permission by the Raiders. This came as he found himself stuck behind rising star fullback Kaeo Weekes on the team's depth chart.
Setting Sights on First-Grade Spot for 2026 Season
The young player has committed to staying in Canberra and outlined clear goals for the upcoming 2026 NRL season. "Obviously, I want to be a first-grader," Stewart stated. "That's what everyone wants to do. I just want to push the boys and push for a spot wherever it is. I don't know - centre, fullback. I'll play anywhere. I just want to show that I can bring value to the team and put myself in good stead for the season. Hopefully get a chance in one of those spots."
While Stewart has done some pre-season work in the centres, his primary focus remains on the fullback position. He aims to be ready as a rotation option in case of injuries, whether to Weekes or halfback Ethan Sanders, noting that Weekes is a backup for the No.7 jersey. Stewart has predominantly played fullback in both NRL and NSW Cup matches, with only two appearances in the centres during Cup games.
Impressive Performance in Pre-Season Trial
Stewart showcased his skills in the Raiders' recent 32-6 trial victory over the Melbourne Storm at Seiffert Oval. Initially slated to play only the first half, he stayed on after Ethan Alaia suffered cramp in the second half. Stewart forced a goal line dropout with a strong kick chase, made a try-saving tackle, ran for 126 meters, provided a line break assist, recorded six tackle busts, and delivered an offload.
Reflecting on the match, Stewart said, "Yeah, it was good ... I was only supposed to play 40, so the legs were a bit heavy in the second, but I feel the boys gelled real well and we got our plays on when we could. I feel our 'D' was real good too - keeping them to six was a big goal and was a big emphasis during the week. A bit of extra time in the legs, but that's alright. That's what the trials are for. I'm honestly happy I got back on - more time in my legs, probably more durability for my legs. It'll be good going into the next trial too."
Stewart's resilience and performance signal a positive step as he aims to overcome past mistakes and secure a regular role in the Raiders' lineup for the 2026 NRL season.
