NRL Legends Condemn Dragons' 'Shambolic' Coaching Dismissal

NRL greats Corey Parker and Luke Keary have fiercely criticized St George Illawarra's handling of coach Shane Flanagan's sacking, labeling the situation as "shambolic" and a nightmare day for the club. The fallout saw players informed only on Monday morning, with Tuesday's training session abruptly cancelled amid the turmoil.

Chaotic Press Conference and Leadership Failures

Dragons CEO Tim Watsford and Chairman Andrew Lancaster addressed the media just after 9:30 am, confirming Flanagan's departure. However, the press conference took a strange turn as they diverted attention to discuss the club's new performance centre. Lancaster used the opportunity to address negative media coverage, describing some reports as "poor" and driven by "personal agendas." Despite the announcement, there was no immediate confirmation of a replacement coach, leaving fans and players in limbo.

Channel Seven's David Riccio described the event as "anything but united," highlighting deep-seated tensions within the club. "The division from the Illawarra side of the business and the St George side has taken an entire day to realise that Dean Young is their interim coach," Riccio stated on The Agenda Setters: Rugby League. He emphasized that for the Dragons to progress, they must present a united front, which was conspicuously absent.

Strong Reactions from NRL Figures

Corey Parker supported Riccio's assessment, condemning the club's leadership. "It's been a shambles the way it has all been handled," Parker said. "If you are a Dragons fan, player or member, you would have thought you would have some clarity on who that coach may be. The lack of leadership this morning was appalling." He noted that Flanagan's dismissal was expected, given his record of 11 consecutive losses and a 34.6% win rate over three years.

Luke Keary expressed bafflement at the proceedings, calling it "laughable." "I watched this press conference and said, 'what is going on here?' This is the most shambolic thing I have ever seen," Keary remarked, questioning if such chaos is normal in the NRL.

Dean Young Appointed as Interim Coach

Late on Monday, the club finally confirmed that Dean Young will take over as interim coach for the remainder of the 2026 season. Young, a Dragons veteran with over 200 games and part of the 2010 premiership side, has previous coaching experience as an assistant following Paul McGregor's sacking in 2020. Riccio praised Young's readiness, stating, "He's done his time. He had an ambition to be a head coach for a long time. He's got Red V DNA in him."

However, Agenda Setters panellist Aaron Woods raised concerns about potential changes under Young's tenure. "He's been there for the past few years under Shane Flanagan and also under Paul McGregor. What is going to change with him in charge? How are fans meant to get excited?" Woods questioned, highlighting ongoing uncertainties within the club.

The Dragons now face a critical period as they navigate this leadership crisis, with fans and analysts closely watching how the team will regroup under Young's interim guidance.
