Warriors' Luke Metcalf Suffers Hamstring Injury in Defeat to Cronulla Sharks
Luke Metcalf's unfortunate streak of injuries has persisted, with the Warriors half sustaining an apparent hamstring issue during his team's 36-22 loss to the Cronulla Sharks. The setback occurred on a day when off-contract fullback Will Kennedy showcased his value to Cronulla, leaving the Warriors to grapple with their second consecutive defeat.
Metcalf's Injury and Warriors' Struggles
Metcalf, who was a standout performer last season and led the Dally M rankings before an ACL rupture, had only just made his comeback from that injury in the previous week's match against the Wests Tigers. The 27-year-old appeared visibly distressed as he limped off the field late in the game, casting significant doubt over his availability for the upcoming clash with Melbourne next Saturday night.
Compounding the Warriors' woes, centre Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad suffered a neck injury, though he was fortunately cleared of any concussion concerns. This adds to the team's mounting challenges as they navigate a tough period in the season.
Questions Over Warriors' Attack and Defensive Lapses
Prior to Metcalf's return, the Warriors had secured victories in their opening three games, but his absence has raised questions about their offensive capabilities. Halfback Tanah Boyd endured a particularly difficult afternoon at Ocean Protect Stadium, struggling in both attack and defence.
It was down Boyd's right-edge defensive channel that Kennedy exploited gaps to score Cronulla's first two tries, with assists from Braydon Trindall and Nicho Hynes. This defensive vulnerability proved costly for the Warriors as they failed to contain the Sharks' momentum.
Will Kennedy's Impressive Performance for Cronulla
Kennedy, one of several Sharks players off contract at the end of this year, had to wait until last October to secure his future with the club for 2026. His performance on Sunday reinforced his importance, as he finished with two tries and nine tackle busts, while also setting up Sione Katoa for a late opportunity.
Cronulla now faces a decision on whether Kennedy is their long-term fullback option or if Liam Ison, recovering from an ACL rupture, will eventually take over. What is evident is that Kennedy seamlessly fits into the Sharks' system, contributing significantly to their success.
Sharks' Dominance and Key Contributions
KL Iro also caused problems for the Warriors, scoring a try and making nine tackle busts, helping the Sharks secure their first back-to-back wins of 2026 and move back into the top eight. Hynes and Trindall continued their effective partnership, orchestrating plays that kept the Warriors on the back foot.
The only concern for Cronulla was a knee injury to Jesse Ramien, but overall, the team displayed cohesion and strength throughout the match.
Warriors' Efforts and Final Outcome
Despite the loss, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak provided a highlight for the Warriors by scoring a hat-trick of tries. One of these came from intercepting a Trindall pass and sprinting 80 metres to score, evading a chasing Kennedy. His third try, another spectacular corner put-down, brought the Warriors within eight points at 24-16 after halftime.
However, the game was effectively sealed when Blayke Brailey executed a grubber kick from dummy-half, allowing Teig Wilton to chase it down and score with 30 minutes remaining. This play underscored the Sharks' control and ultimately secured their victory.
The Warriors will need to regroup quickly as they face Melbourne, while Cronulla looks to build on this momentum in their pursuit of a successful season.
