Comets Crushed 55-26 by Warriors in WANL Opener

Reigning WA Netball League premiers Comets now understand the enormity of the task required to defend their title after suffering a crushing 55-26 defeat at the hands of the West Coast Warriors in the opening round.

The Warriors, who were beaten semifinalists last season, wasted no time showcasing their off-season improvements. Both new recruits and returning players fired early to establish a commanding lead.

Nationally identified youngster Ava Buselich was outstanding in her first game as a contracted player, picking off intercepts with ease. West Coast Fever training partner Scarlet Jauncey marshalled the defence effectively, ensuring the Comets struggled to find their rhythm.

The Warriors led from start to finish in the 29-goal victory, with newcomer Zoe Harper delivering an impressive 47 goals. The defensive unit, led by Jauncey, stifled the Comets' attacking options throughout the match.

In other round one action, Peel Lightning demonstrated that their off-season recruiting strategy was spot on, dominating Rangers from the first centre pass to secure a 47-31 win. New Lightning player Chelsea Bartlett made an instant impact in the goal keeper role, while Kasey Ridout contributed 35 goals to seal the victory.

Last year's beaten grand finalists Western Roar also suffered an upset, going down 55-43 to Southside Demons. The match was tightly contested in the first quarter, but the Demons seized control in the latter part of the second period. The Roar were left to rue the absence of key players.

Demon Tierrah Miller was a standout performer in the mid-court, while Chanel Gomes provided solid defence. Experienced shooter Georgia Pitt scored steadily, finishing with 30 goals to help her team secure the win.

The Sharks defeated a gallant Jets side 53-38, with the Jets managing to stay with their more fancied rivals until the final quarter. The Sharks' defence, comprising Indiana Squires, Lily Anderson, and Jess Penny, proved too strong when it mattered most, shutting down the Jets' attacking threats.
