Indoor Go-Karting Venue Proposed for Welshpool, Speeds Up to 70km/h
PowerPlay Indoor Go-Karting Plan for Welshpool

Plans for a high-speed indoor entertainment hub are accelerating in Perth's south-eastern suburbs, with a proposal for a new electric go-karting centre now before the City of Canning.

Adrenaline-Fuelled Plans for Welshpool Industrial Area

A development application has been formally submitted to convert two existing warehouses on the corner of Welshpool Road and Pilbara Street into a state-of-the-art indoor racing venue. The proposal, lodged by the operators of the PowerPlay brand, seeks to bring a unique recreational offering to the heart of the Welshpool industrial precinct.

If approved, the facility would feature PowerPlay's signature electric go-kart racing on a multi-level track, complete with ramps and bridges. The modern karts are known for providing instant power and acceleration, all without producing exhaust fumes. While capable of reaching speeds up to 70km/h, the karts are managed to ensure safe speeds on the circuit, with the ability to drift and spin adding to the thrill.

Inside the Proposed PowerPlay Facility

The application outlines a comprehensive entertainment centre. Beyond the main racing track, the venue would include electronic amusement games and a dedicated mezzanine party zone for functions and events. Construction work on the building has reportedly already commenced, indicating the proponent's confidence in the project.

The centre is proposed to operate seven days a week from 9am to 9pm, providing both daytime and night-time activity. It is expected to host up to 80 people at any one time, including staff, drivers, and spectators, with an estimated average of 264 patrons per day. For parking, the plan includes 25 on-site bays reserved for exclusive use by the centre's visitors.

Community Focus and Motorsport Pedigree

In their application, the proponents emphasised their commitment to responsible operation. "We are committed to ensuring that this facility enhances the recreational offerings in the Welshpool area while operating in a safe and responsible manner," the application stated. It further noted that operational considerations had been addressed to minimise potential impacts on neighbouring land uses.

The PowerPlay brand is led by chief executive Glenn Macneall, a veteran of more than 100 World Rally Championship events. Macneall has previously described PowerPlay as a blend of competitive motorsports and accessible fun. "PowerPlay is perfect for anyone who loves an adrenaline rush," Mr Macneall said. "It doesn't matter if you're a serial rev-head or a karting first-timer, you can join the fun."

He highlighted the team's passion, noting that many staff are deeply involved in go-karting and rally sports, aiming to share their love of racing with the wider community in a controlled environment.

This would be the fourth PowerPlay venue in Perth, following successful openings in Joondalup in 2020, Bibra Lake in 2022, and Malaga in 2024. The community now has a final opportunity to comment on the Welshpool proposal, with the submission period closing at 5pm on Wednesday, December 3. Following this consultation, the application will proceed to the City of Canning for official consideration and determination.
