Piastri Warns of 'Big Loss' for F1 if Verstappen Walks Away Amid Sport's Revamp

Australian Formula One star Oscar Piastri has voiced serious concerns about the potential departure of four-time world champion Max Verstappen from the sport, describing it as a "big loss" and "not a great look" for the global racing series. Piastri, along with his McLaren teammate Lando Norris, shared their admiration for Verstappen during a media session at the team's headquarters in Woking, England, on Wednesday.

Verstappen's Disillusionment with F1's Future

Max Verstappen, the 28-year-old Dutch driver for Red Bull, has been a vocal critic of Formula One's comprehensive overhaul set for 2026. He has expressed a loss of enjoyment in the sport, comparing it to the video game Mario Kart and hinting at a possible exit after the recent Japanese Grand Prix. Piastri responded to these hints by emphasizing Verstappen's role as a benchmark for all drivers.

"I think it would be a shame for the sport to lose Max, especially at this point in his career," Piastri stated. "It would be a big loss for the sport as a whole. As drivers, we want to race against and try to prove ourselves against the best. Max has shown his calibre over the last decade, particularly in the past five or six years, where he has been the benchmark. So, for everyone, it would be a pretty big shame, and obviously not a great look."

Norris Echoes Concerns Over Verstappen's Legacy

Lando Norris added his perspective, acknowledging Verstappen's achievements and the impact his departure would have. "Max has earned the right to go and do whatever he wants. He's won four World Championships, and he's always been the guy," Norris said. "So, it will be a shame for the sport, and it will be a miss if that happens, because he is probably one of the best drivers you'll ever see in Formula One. It's also a shame for us as competitors, as he makes our lives incredibly tough at times, but he's always good fun to race against. Hopefully, things improve, and he stays longer, especially since he aims for a fifth world championship."

Rule Changes Aimed at Appeasing Drivers

Amid a break in the racing schedule due to cancelled grands prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia because of the Middle East conflict, Formula One has introduced rule changes to address driver concerns and enhance racing for the upcoming Miami Grand Prix on May 3. These adjustments include allowing drivers to push flat-out for longer during qualifying sessions and implementing a boost-button cap to reduce dangerous closing speeds. Mercedes' young talent Kimi Antonelli and George Russell are expected to lead the field under these new conditions.

When asked about the changes, Piastri smiled and noted, "I need to go through all the details of the rules and have someone smarter than me explain what has changed! But it is a step in the right direction for sure. How far it goes in addressing the problems, we will have to wait and see until we get on track."

The potential exit of Max Verstappen, coupled with ongoing adjustments to the sport's regulations, highlights a critical period for Formula One as it navigates driver satisfaction and competitive integrity.
