Matt Payne Triumphs in Christchurch for First Supercars Win of the Season

Reigning Bathurst 1000 champion Matt Payne has converted pole position in Christchurch into his first Supercars victory of the season, marking a dramatic recovery after a challenging start to the day. Payne dominated the second 37-lap sprint race on Saturday, finishing comfortably ahead of Red Bull Ampol star Broc Feeney.

All-Ford Podium Sealed in Thrilling Finish

James Golding executed a last-lap pass on Payne's New Zealand compatriot Ryan Wood to secure third place, ensuring an all-Ford podium. This result highlights the strong performance of Ford teams in the Christchurch round, adding excitement to the championship standings.

Payne's win was particularly impressive given the adversity he faced earlier. In the day's first race, he struck disaster when he lost a tyre, which could have derailed his entire weekend. Reflecting on the turnaround, Payne said, "We had a wheel go missing down the middle of the track a few hours ago, so what a turnaround. Our car's been so fast all day, we rolled out really strong. Just being able to use it finally to get the win this afternoon, it's been so epic."

Kostecki Holds Off Allen for Fifth Season Victory

Earlier in the day, championship leader Brodie Kostecki fended off a fierce challenge from young gun Kai Allen to secure his fifth win of the season. Allen, who broke through for his maiden Supercars win on Friday in the first race of the Christchurch round, was on Kostecki's tail for the majority of Saturday's first race.

The 2023 champion used his experience to hang tough amid a strong push from his fellow Ford rival. There was barely a second between the pair for the entire race, with both drivers pitting at the same time. This was a role reversal from Friday when Kostecki trailed Allen and was unable to find a way ahead.

Kostecki commented on his performance, saying, "Got a ripper start again. We've been dialled in on that this weekend. We changed a lot on the car and we've got the same sort of pace, it feels like, to the guys next to us, but stoked to get the win. We had a little pit stop fumble, but was able to just use the clean air to my advantage. Towards the end, Kai did everything he could, he was up in my bumper ... Once his front tyres got hot, it was game over."

The Christchurch round has proven to be a pivotal event in the Supercars championship, with close racing and unexpected twists keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Payne's recovery and Kostecki's resilience underscore the high stakes and competitive nature of the series.
