Broc Feeney Triumphs in Grueling Sydney 500 to Reclaim Supercars Lead
In a dramatic and physically demanding showdown, Broc Feeney clinched victory at the chaotic Sydney 500, describing it as the hardest race of his career. Starting from pole position, the Triple Eight star navigated treacherous conditions, including a cool suit failure in intense heat, to secure the win in Sunday's final 200km sprint at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Late Challenge and Mechanical Drama
Feeney faced a fierce late challenge from Kai Allen of Grove Racing, but Allen's bid for a podium finish ended abruptly with seven laps remaining due to a suspected front-left suspension failure, forcing him to retire. This paved the way for Feeney to cross the finish line first, followed by Matt Payne in second and Cam Waters, who delivered a masterclass drive from 20th on the grid to claim third place.
The victory restores Feeney's early championship lead, though he now shares the top spot with Payne, both tied at 259 points. This comes after Anton De Pasquale of Team 18 briefly held the lead following his win in Saturday's race.
Physical Toll and Team Struggles
Feeney's triumph was not without personal cost. Suffering from overheating due to the cool suit malfunction, he was attended to by medical staff after the race, exhausted and dehydrated. "When things aren't cooling as well as they should be, then you drink a lot of water, and then I ran out of water," Feeney explained. "I was pushing super hard amongst all the stuff that we had going on. To walk away with another win, that was certainly the hardest race I've had inside a car."
His teammate, Will Brown, also experienced cooling issues and required medical treatment before being discharged, highlighting the extreme conditions faced by drivers.
Chaos on the Track
The race was marked by multiple incidents that added to the drama. A yellow flag on lap 29 triggered a scramble to pit lane after James Golding's left rear wheel came loose, bringing out the safety car. Shortly after, heavy rain and strong winds hit the track on lap 32, leading to chaos on the restart.
Anton De Pasquale spun off-track after contact with Brodie Kostecki, taking Feeney's teammate Will Brown with him. Both drivers finished outside the top ten, with Brown later receiving a 15-second penalty for his involvement in the incident.
Standout Performances and Penalties
Defending champion Chaz Mostert impressed with a fourth-place finish after qualifying 22nd, benefiting from a penalty to Brodie Kostecki, who was docked 15 seconds for spinning Aaron Cameron on the final lap. This provided some relief for Mostert, who had been disqualified from a previous race due to tyre sensor issues.
The race results solidified Feeney's strong start to the season, with two wins from three races and a pole position in his new Ford Mustang, showcasing his resilience and skill under pressure.
