Veteran Queensland Jockey Hospitalised After Horrific Trackwork Accident
Veteran Queensland jockey Shane McGovern remains in an induced coma at Townsville Hospital following a devastating accident where he was trapped underneath a dead horse for approximately six hours. The 67-year-old now confronts the grave possibility of losing both legs due to severe nerve damage sustained during the prolonged entrapment.
Accident Details and Rescue
The incident occurred at McGovern's Charters Towers stables, located more than 130 kilometres southwest of Townsville. His nine-year-old gelding, Reformist, reportedly suffered a fatal aneurysm during routine trackwork and collapsed directly onto the experienced jockey.
McGovern was eventually discovered by his wife, trainer Kim McGovern, who initially assumed he had gone for a ride. "I thought 'well, that's Shane, he'll just go off for a ride', which is what he does because the horse was supposed to be racing on Monday," Kim McGovern recounted. "But I'm absolutely kicking myself, and it's a thing I will never forget. And then this ghoulish little arm comes up, and he says 'I'm all right'."
Medical Prognosis and Treatment
Australian Jockeys' Association health and safety officer Kevin Ring confirmed the severity of McGovern's injuries. "There's a possibility he may lose one or both legs," Ring stated, explaining that the jockey's blood circulation was cut off during the six-hour ordeal, resulting in significant nerve damage.
McGovern has already undergone surgery on his thighs. In a positive development, he regained consciousness briefly before doctors placed him back into an induced coma to aid his recovery. "(Doctors) put the breathing tube back in to give his body a rest and they'll keep him like that for a couple of days," Kim McGovern told News Corp.
Racing Community Rallies Support
The Mount Isa Race Club, where McGovern has been a long-standing supporter, has initiated fundraising efforts to assist the family. "We are deeply saddened to hear of jockey Shane McGovern's recent track work accident," the club announced in an official statement. "Shane has long been a valued and dedicated supporter of our club and the wider North West racing community. People like Shane are the backbone of country racing, and our race days simply wouldn't be the same without them."
The club is donating $1,000 and organising a series of raffles to generate additional financial support. "Your support of these upcoming raffles would be greatly appreciated. Our thoughts are with Shane and Kim," the statement concluded.

Messages of encouragement have flooded social media platforms, highlighting McGovern's reputation within the racing industry. One close friend wrote: "I've known Shane for over 50 years. He's the toughest jockey in Australia. If anyone can get through this, he will. Keep fighting mate."
