In a spectacular display of speed and determination, the greyhound Spencer delivered a stunning upset to seize the Group 2 Mandurah Cup at Greyhounds WA Mandurah last Friday.
A Surprising Start Leads to Dominance
Entering the race as a significant outsider with long odds, the Rod Noden-trained chaser immediately turned heads with an explosive jump from the boxes. This brilliant start positioned Spencer as an unexpected early leader, a role he embraced with conviction over the 488-metre journey.
Interestingly, the dog, which originally raced in Victoria before joining Noden's kennels in early September, is typically recognised for his stamina in longer-distance events. However, on this occasion, his early pace was decisive.
An Unassailable Lead to the Finish
Once he secured the front position, Spencer's victory never seemed in doubt. The reserve runner, Macaroni Monelli, attempted to mount a challenge but was powerless against Spencer's relentless drive.
Continuing to power ahead, Spencer extended his margin with every stride, ultimately surging across the finish line in a blistering 27.08 seconds. The winning margin was a commanding more than eight lengths ahead of Macaroni Monelli, while the pre-race favourite, Iconic Jet, could only manage third place.
Career-Defining Win for the Underdog
This triumph marks the most significant achievement of Spencer's career to date. The victory improves his impressive overall record to 15 wins from 61 starts, cementing his status as a greyhound capable of defying expectations on the biggest stages.
The result was a testament to both the dog's raw talent and the strategic preparation by his trainer, Rod Noden, and his team, proving that in greyhound racing, determination can outweigh pedigree.
