Sentimental Legend Poised to Enhance Pike-Williams Derby Legacy
Sentimental Legend is set to team up with champion jockey William Pike in a bid to secure the Group 2 $400,000 WATC Derby (2400m), a race where Pike has already achieved an astounding 11 victories. This partnership aims to further solidify the dominance of Pike and trainers Grant and Alana Williams in this prestigious event.
Pike's Unprecedented Derby Success
Since his first win aboard Cats Fun in 2006, Pike has made the Derby his own, with a remarkable streak that includes multiple triumphs with horses trained by the Williams duo. Over the years, they have prepared winners such as Dreamaway (2011), Delicacy (2015), and Western Empire (2021), showcasing their expertise in peaking horses for major races.
Sentimental Legend's Journey to the Derby
The Brutal gelding, Sentimental Legend, has been meticulously prepared for this Derby tilt. After winning on debut in a Bunbury maiden last November, he has shown steady improvement through his campaign. Key performances include a third-place finish first-up, a subsequent win, a strong second in the J C Roberts (1800m), and a recent victory in the Melvista Stakes (2200m), which solidified his status as a top contender.
Competitive Field Ahead
Pike acknowledges that this year's Derby is highly competitive, with strong rivals like Wonderfully Made and Wynn Las Vegas in the mix. He also highlighted Aberdeen Flyer as a potential dark horse. Sentimental Legend is currently rated a $2.50 second favourite by TABtouch, trailing Wonderfully Made ($2.20) and ahead of Aberdeen Flyer ($7).
Expert Insights and Expectations
In an interview with SEN, Pike expressed confidence in Sentimental Legend, noting his familiarity with the horse and the trainers' ability to prepare him for peak performance. He emphasized the quality of the field, predicting a thrilling race that will test all contenders to their limits.
