Star New Zealand two-year-old pacer Off Shore has made a surprise arrival in Western Australia, creating a buzz among harness racing enthusiasts. The talented colt, trained by the renowned Cran Dalgety, touched down in Perth earlier this week, marking an unexpected but welcome development for the local racing scene.
Impressive Pedigree and Early Success
Off Shore, a son of the champion sire Bettor's Delight, has already shown tremendous potential in his brief career. With two wins from three starts in New Zealand, including a impressive victory at Addington Raceway, the two-year-old has been touted as one of the most promising pacers of his generation. His dam, the Art Major mare Offshorez, also boasts a strong racing pedigree, having produced multiple winners.
Why Western Australia?
The decision to bring Off Shore to Western Australia has surprised many in the industry, given the colt's early success and the strong competition in New Zealand. However, trainer Cran Dalgety explained that the move was strategic, aiming to expose the horse to different racing conditions and potentially target some of the lucrative two-year-old races on the West Australian calendar.
“We’ve always thought highly of this horse, and we believe he can adapt well to the tracks here in Western Australia. The racing style suits him, and there are some nice races coming up that we think he can be competitive in,” Dalgety said.
Local Reaction
The news has been met with excitement from local trainers and punters alike. Western Australian harness racing officials have welcomed the arrival, noting that it adds depth to the two-year-old division. “It’s always great to see quality horses from other jurisdictions come and test themselves here. It raises the standard of racing and gives our local horses a benchmark to aim for,” said a spokesperson for Harness Racing WA.
Future Plans
Off Shore is expected to be aimed at the major two-year-old features in the state, including the Pearl Classic and the Western Australian Derby. His first start in Australia is likely to come in a trial or a low-key race to acclimatise him to the new surroundings before stepping up in class.
With his early talent and the careful management of the Dalgety stable, Off Shore could become a major player in the coming months. Harness racing fans in Western Australia will be eagerly watching his progress.
