Autumn Glow Seeks to Silence Skeptics in Queen Elizabeth Stakes Challenge
Autumn Glow, the undefeated four-year-old mare, is set to prove her doubters wrong as she steps up to 2000 meters for the first time in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick this Saturday. With an impeccable record of 11 wins from 11 starts, she has captivated Australian racing fans, but her breeding has raised eyebrows among experts.
Breeding Concerns Loom Over Distance Test
Owner Paul Messara, founder of Arrowfield Stud, expressed reservations about Autumn Glow's ability to handle the longer distance. "(Via Africa) was an out-and-out sprinter herself, and her first three generations have only won over 1200m, so that's the worry I have," Messara stated. He noted that while her sire, The Autumn Sun, won up to 2000m, he was likely better suited to 1600m, similar to Autumn Glow's current profile.
Despite these concerns, trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald are optimistic. "She settles very well in her runs. James is very confident she will finish it off," Messara added. "The track's going to be good, and she's fitter than she's ever been, so there are a lot of pluses." A recent gallop showcased her peak condition, with Messara remarking, "when she went past, you couldn't hear her breathing."
High Stakes and Future Ambitions
If Autumn Glow succeeds, it could open doors to prestigious races like the Cox Plate. "It's the right time to try, and if she gets up in that, we know she's capable of getting that ground, then we can think about races like the Cox Plate," Messara explained. He emphasized the excitement surrounding the event, saying, "It'll put on a bit of a show for the public and racegoers and, if she's good enough, she'll win it."
Competition Awaits in Formidable Field
Autumn Glow will face stiff competition from proven performers. Sir Delius, priced at $7, has consistently placed third this preparation, including behind Autumn Glow in the Verry Elleegant and Aeliana in the Ranvet. Aeliana, also at $7, followed her Ranvet victory with a win in the Tancred, defeating the globetrotting gelding Dubai Honour, valued at $9.
As betting markets show Autumn Glow as a slight drifter, the racing world watches eagerly to see if she can overcome her breeding limitations and maintain her unbeaten streak in this high-profile showdown.
