Golf Tournament Lockdown Amid Manhunt for Murder Suspect at TPC Sawgrass

The Players Championship was forced to lock out fans ahead of Saturday's third round after a dramatic manhunt for an alleged murderer moved onto the TPC Sawgrass golf course. Authorities reported that a man shot and killed two people in the car park of a nearby chemist before escaping onto the prestigious golfing grounds.

Details of the Shooting and Manhunt

St Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick identified the suspect as Christian Barrios, who turned 32 on Saturday. According to Hardwick, Barrios shot two people multiple times at approximately 10.30pm on Friday night in what he described as a domestic violence situation. The store where the shooting occurred is located about a mile (1.6km) from the TPC Sawgrass course.

Canine units pursued Barrios onto the golf course after the incident. At one point, Barrios picked up a PGA Tour radio and later dropped it. He then stole a black BMW, leading to a pursuit by Nassau County authorities who forced the car to crash into the woods. The suspect fled on foot before being found and taken into custody at around 8am Saturday in Nassau County, which is located an hour north of TPC Sawgrass in Florida.

Impact on The Players Championship

The first round of the tournament began on schedule at 8.15am, but the PGA cited operational considerations in deciding not to open the gates to fans until 9am. Hospitality areas were further delayed, opening only at 11am. This lockdown significantly affected the event's atmosphere and spectator access during the critical third round.

Background on the Suspect and Victims

Sheriff Hardwick stated that Barrios has a long criminal history and knew the victims. Both individuals were shot multiple times and were taken to a hospital, where they tragically died. The incident has raised concerns about security at major sporting events and highlighted the challenges of managing public safety in such high-profile settings.

The swift response by law enforcement ensured the suspect was captured, but the event left a somber mark on what is typically a celebratory golf tournament. Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the shooting and the manhunt.
