Sam Kerr's US Return Confirmed with Denver Summit FC Signing

The long-anticipated return of Matildas captain Sam Kerr to the United States has taken a significant step forward, with reports confirming her signing with Denver Summit FC. This move comes as her contract with English powerhouse Chelsea is set to expire at the end of the current season, paving the way for her re-entry into the American soccer scene after a six-year stint in England.

Kerr's New Destination Revealed Amid Champions League Exit

Just hours after a disappointing exit from the Champions League, the 32-year-old striker's next chapter has been unveiled. According to Channel 10, Kerr has inked a deal with first-year NWSL outfit Denver Summit FC, based in Colorado. The club, which boasts high-profile owners including Winter Olympic star Mikaela Shiffrin and NFL legend Peyton Manning, made its official league debut last month.

Denver Summit FC has already attracted multiple international players for its inaugural season, such as American Yazmeen Ryan and Canadian Olympic gold medallist Janine Sonis. However, Kerr's arrival later this season—expected after Chelsea's campaign concludes in late May—represents a major coup for the fledgling team.

A Homecoming and NWSL Legacy

Kerr's move to the US also signifies a homecoming for her wife, Kristie Mewis, an American international who relocated to the UK to play for West Ham and be with Kerr. Mewis, 35, has not returned to professional soccer since giving birth to their son Jagger in May last year.

During the NWSL's early years as a premier women's league, Kerr was a standout performer, earning MVP honors twice and leading as the top goalscorer for three consecutive seasons. The league has recently regained prominence, supported by a new 'high impact player' rule, with Kerr's Chelsea teammates Catarina Macario and Guro Reiten joining San Diego Wave and Gotham FC, respectively.

Matildas Leadership and FIFA Series Squad

In related news, Kerr has been named to captain the Matildas in an upcoming four-nation FIFA Series in Kenya next month. Australia will face world No.153 Malawi on April 11 in Nairobi, followed by a match against either world No.134 Kenya or world No.67 India. This tournament marks the team's first games since their 1-0 loss to Japan in the Women's Asian Cup final on March 21.

The 22-player squad includes stars like Caitlin Foord, Mackenzie Arnold, Steph Catley, Alanna Kennedy, Hayley Raso, and Clare Wheeler. However, notable absences include Mary Fowler, Ellie Carpenter, Kyra Cooney-Cross, and Katrina Gorry, who have been granted leave from the tournament. Defender Clare Hunt will also miss out due to knee surgery following an injury sustained during the Asian Cup.

Matildas coach Joe Montemurro, who has been in the role for just over 10 months, views the FIFA Series as a crucial opportunity to refine the squad and playing style ahead of next year's Women's World Cup in Brazil. Newcomer Leticia McKenna from Melbourne City makes her debut, while Jessika Nash and Isabel Gomez return to international duty.

Kerr, who scored four goals in the Asian Cup, will lead the side with Steph Catley as her deputy. Montemurro emphasized the importance of this window, stating, "This window gives us a valuable opportunity to reflect on the Women's Asian Cup and continue building consistency that will underpin the team over the next 16 months. The FIFA Series in Kenya will offer unique challenges and a test against diverse opposition. As we build toward the FIFA Women's World Cup, it's essential we expose ourselves to the styles and environments we'll encounter on the global stage."
