Andrew McDonald's 64* in Grade Cricket Cameo Before Ashes
McDonald's grade cricket cameo before Ashes

Just days before taking charge of the Australian team in the Ashes opener, coach Andrew McDonald made a surprise appearance in fourth-grade cricket, teaming up with his son Ollie to secure a commanding victory.

Father-Son Duo Dominate in Grade Cricket

The former Test allrounder turned national coach seized some free time before heading to Perth for the first Test against England by opening the batting for North Geelong on Saturday. McDonald, 42, proved he hasn't lost his touch with the bat, cruising to an unbeaten 64 while sharing a memorable partnership with his son.

Better than just having a hit, the McDonald combination put on a 100-run stand that secured a comprehensive nine-wicket away win against St Peters. While Andrew remained not out at the end, Ollie contributed a valuable 51 before being caught and bowled shortly before victory was secured.

McDonald's Batting Prowess on Display

The Australian coach displayed his class with seven boundaries and one six during his innings, while his son matched the tempo with four boundaries of his own. Despite being listed as 'Fill-in' on the online team sheet, North Geelong had openly announced 'A.McDonald' in their team announcement on Thursday night.

The club had teased the appearance in their social media post, stating: "Still plenty of unavailables across the grades but yet again still some solid sides taking to the park this week, including a small cameo in our 4th XI."

Not McDonald's First Grade Cricket Return

Although McDonald retired from first-class cricket in 2015, he has maintained connections with Geelong grade cricket. This isn't his first return to local cricket this year - back in February 2024, he was enticed back to play a sixth-grade match with Geelong West.

On that occasion, opponents South Barwon were shocked by the high-profile inclusion but appreciated the opportunity. McDonald batted at number five and scored 62 as Geelong West piled on 290 runs from their 40 overs, with South Barwon dismissed for 109 in reply.

The timing of McDonald's latest grade cricket appearance adds an interesting dimension to his preparation for the Ashes series, demonstrating his ongoing passion for the game at all levels while maintaining his competitive edge just days before one of cricket's biggest rivalries resumes.
