England Cricketer Ben Duckett Fined for Speeding Offence
England batter Ben Duckett has been convicted of speeding at 93mph (150km/h) and fined £700 (approximately $A1345) by a court. This legal setback comes in the same week that he withdrew from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in a determined effort to rescue his international cricket career.
Career Uncertainty and Off-Field Controversies
The 31-year-old left-hander's position as a Test cricket opener for England is now under serious doubt. This follows a significant decline in his form over the past year, compounded by controversy surrounding a drunken incident during the recent Ashes tour in Australia.
Last week, Duckett made the decision to pull out of a lucrative £200,000 (around $A384,000) contract to play for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. He stated that his priority is to focus on county cricket and secure his spot in England's Test side ahead of the upcoming summer series against New Zealand.
Apology and Further Legal Troubles
Duckett has issued a public apology for past unprofessional behaviour, specifically referencing an incident where he was filmed drunk on a night out in Noosa, Australia, during the Ashes tour. However, last Friday brought another blow when he was convicted by Cannock Magistrates' Court for speeding on the A50 near Stoke in Staffordshire.
The offence occurred in a 70mph (113km/h) zone, with Duckett driving at 93mph (150km/h). He pleaded guilty to the charge and offered no mitigation for his actions. Magistrate Michelle Foster imposed the £700 fine, along with four penalty points on his licence, £120 (about $A230) in costs, and a £280 (approximately $A538) victim surcharge.
Timing of the Speeding Incident
The speeding incident took place just after 1:30pm on August 24. Remarkably, this was only hours before Duckett played a key role in a Birmingham Phoenix Hundred victory over the Manchester Originals at Old Trafford. Duckett admitted to the speeding offence in September after being contacted by Staffordshire Police.
The case proceeded through the Single Justice Procedure after police decided to pursue a criminal prosecution rather than an out-of-court fine, due to the excessively high speed involved.
History of Legal Issues
This is not Duckett's first encounter with the criminal justice system. As a rising star in 2015, he was prosecuted for drink-driving after crashing his car into a ditch in Northamptonshire. That incident resulted in a 12-month road ban, highlighting a pattern of off-field disciplinary problems that now threaten to overshadow his cricketing talents.
The combination of this latest conviction, his recent form slump, and past controversies places immense pressure on Duckett as he attempts to rebuild his reputation and secure his future in international cricket.
