Perth Wildcats Release Sunday Dech and Lat Mayen Ahead of NBL Free Agency
The Perth Wildcats have made significant roster moves by releasing contracted players Sunday Dech and Lat Mayen, creating two additional spots as NBL Free Agency approaches. This strategic decision allows the club to target more Australian talent in their bid to strengthen the team for the upcoming season.
Contract Details and Performance Struggles
Sunday Dech joined the Wildcats for the 25-26 season on a three-year deal, while Lat Mayen secured a two-year contract. However, both players faced challenges in securing consistent playing time during the last season, leading to their release. Dech, who dealt with injury concerns early in the season, averaged only 10 minutes per game, primarily coming off the bench. Mayen's court time was even more limited, with an average of just seven minutes per game.
In February, Mayen received a late opportunity to start when the Wildcats were hit by injuries, but he failed to make a significant impact and only appeared in one other match for the remainder of the season. These performance issues ultimately influenced the Wildcats' decision to part ways with the duo.
Wildcats' Current Roster and Free Agency Plans
With the release of Dech and Mayen, the Perth Wildcats now have enhanced flexibility to pursue two more Australian players in the free agency market. The team's current roster includes imports Kristian Doolittle and Dylan Windler, who are securely under contract. Additionally, players such as Jo Lual-Acuil, Ben Henshall, Jaron Rillie, Next Star Noa Kouakou-Heugue, and Development Player Cam Huefner remain part of the squad.
NBL Free Agency is set to open on Friday, providing the Wildcats with a crucial opportunity to refine their lineup. The club is focused on improving upon last season's performance, where they reached the semifinals, by adding depth and talent through strategic signings.
This move underscores the Wildcats' proactive approach to roster management as they prepare for the competitive landscape of the NBL. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how the team leverages these new openings to build a stronger contender for the upcoming basketball season.
