Perth Wildcats Coach John Rillie Gives Dylan Windler Time to Prove Fitness for Crucial Semifinal
Perth Wildcats coach John Rillie has stated that injured star Dylan Windler will be afforded "as much time as necessary" to demonstrate his readiness for the season-defining clash against the Sydney Kings on Saturday night. This must-win semifinal game at RAC Arena is critical for the Wildcats to keep their championship hopes alive after a narrow one-point loss in the series opener.
Windler's Injury and Impact on the Wildcats
Dylan Windler, a key import forward for the Perth Wildcats, suffered an injury to the plantar fascia in his left foot during the final play of Wednesday's game in Sydney. Despite his standout performance, where he scored 18 points with an impressive five-of-eight shooting from three-point range, Windler did not participate in team training on Friday. He was observed receiving treatment while using crutches on the sidelines.
Coach Rillie emphasized that Windler's availability remains uncertain, but he is not being ruled out. "We’ll give him as much time as necessary to give himself a chance," Rillie commented. "(We will) just give him time to recover, that’s all we can do. Our medical staff are just giving him that attention that he needs."
Rillie highlighted Windler's significant contributions beyond scoring, noting his defensive skills, rebounding, and ability to make crucial plays. "He makes a lot of things tick for us," Rillie said, referencing Windler's game-winning shots in previous finals matches, including a deep three-pointer against Melbourne United.
Potential Replacements and Team Strategy
If Windler is unable to play, the Wildcats may turn to other players to step up. Former NBL star Jason Cadee suggested that Sunday Dech could take on more responsibility due to his defensive versatility and experience in high-pressure games. "Windler is a big x-factor for them because of his size, ability to shoot and do other different things. They’ve struggled when he hasn’t been available," Cadee explained.
Cadee also mentioned David Duke as another player who might need to adapt his role if Windler is sidelined. The Wildcats have dealt with injuries throughout the season, with players like Jesse Wagstaff, David Okwera, and Lat Mayen showing readiness to contribute when called upon.
Wildcats' Confidence and Kings' Challenge
The Perth Wildcats narrowly lost the first semifinal game by one point, but their strong performance has boosted team confidence. However, Cadee warned that the Sydney Kings, who had a lay-off before the series, are likely to improve in the second game. "Perth had a real chance to go one-up and give the series a shake, so that will get Sydney’s senses back up," he said.
Cadee added that the Wildcats must replicate their previous effort and adapt to the Kings' expected enhancements. "It’s about how does Perth match that and improve," he noted, emphasizing the high stakes of Saturday's must-win scenario.
With the season on the line, the Perth Wildcats are preparing for a pivotal showdown, hoping Windler can recover in time to make a difference on the court.
