Australian Sprinter Torrie Lewis Retrospectively Crowned World Junior Champion
Australian sprinter Torrie Lewis has been retrospectively crowned a world junior champion after a doping suspension altered the results of the 2024 under-20 World Junior Championships. The 21-year-old, who initially finished second in the 200m final, has now been awarded the gold medal following the Athletics Integrity Unit's announcement that Adaejah Hodge was suspended for doping violations.
Historic Victory After Doping Disqualification
Lewis ran a personal best time of 22.88 seconds in the 200m final, finishing 0.14 seconds behind Hodge from the British Virgin Islands. However, with Hodge's disqualification, history will now record Lewis as the first clean athlete to cross the line. In a social media post, Lewis expressed her delayed joy, stating, "Maybe a bit weird to post 1.5 years later but today I got the news that I was the first clean runner across the line in the 200m U20 championships in 2024. So after the DQ of the runner who tested positive, I can happily say I am the 2024 u20 200m world champ."
Details of the Doping Suspension
The Athletics Integrity Unit announced that Adaejah Hodge has served a two-year doping ban, effective from August 30, 2024, with seven months suspended due to her cooperation with investigators. She became eligible to return to competition on January 28 this year but has forfeited her 200m gold and 100m silver medals from the World Junior Championships. The ban was imposed for the presence of GW501516 sulfone and GW501516 sulfoxide, which the AIU stated was unintentionally ingested. All of Hodge's competitive results between August 28 and November 22, 2024, have been disqualified.
Impact on Recent Achievements
Despite the suspension, Hodge, now 19, recently won an NCAA indoor title last weekend, securing victory in the 200m and finishing as runner-up in the 60m. This development underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining integrity in athletics while highlighting Lewis's rightful claim to the world junior championship title.
