From lane five, the 22-year-old Kennedy exploded out of the blocks with a dream start, overtaking Gout in lane six within the first 50 metres of the race. He built a two-metre lead heading into the straight, but faced a blistering final 100 metres from the teenager, who closed the gap significantly. At the finish line, Kennedy crossed just 0.05 seconds ahead of Gout, showcasing his enduring prowess in Australian athletics.
Channel 7 commentator Bruce McAvaney praised Kennedy's explosive start, calling it "absolutely breathtaking", while Tamsyn Lewis-Manou noted that Gout appeared to stumble slightly early in the race, possibly due to the wet conditions affecting his power out of the blocks.

Australian Monique Hanlon looked formidable throughout the women's 200m, finishing first with a time of 23.61 seconds, ahead of Mia Gross (23.71) and Japan's Abigeirufuka Ido (23.85).
