Canberra Marathon Festival Launches with Vibrant Community Participation
The Canberra Marathon running festival commenced this weekend, drawing hundreds of participants and spectators to the capital's scenic routes. The event, held on April 11-12, 2026, features races including the marathon, 10-kilometre, and 5-kilometre runs, showcasing both elite athletes and everyday runners.
Inspiring Stories from the Starting Line
Among the participants, Bianca, who ran her first half marathon just a year ago, has founded a running group specifically for adults who did not grow up playing sports. "A lot of Australians grew up with sport, for all of us we're adult runners," she explained. Her group, Canberra Pinoy Runners, connects Filipinos and others from Asian cultures, fostering a sense of community and shared experience.
The group has grown significantly since its inception at the start of 2026, expanding from three to 20 members who train together every Sunday morning around Lake Burley Griffin. "It's been really great to go through that journey ... We've been doing it for 14 weeks and now we're all running the race this weekend," Bianca shared.
Diverse Participants Share Their Experiences
Paul McKay, a seasoned runner, returned to the sport to keep up with his children and participated in the 10-kilometre race. He noted the course was "good, fun and surprisingly hard," particularly highlighting the challenging hill near Parliament House. Meanwhile, Joe Rangiah, a final-year medical student at the Australian National University, took up running during COVID-19 lockdowns to support his mental health and was cheered on by friends during the race.
Elite Athletes Shine in Competitive Races
In the competitive events, Australian Paralympian Michael Roger won the men's 10-kilometre race, adding to his accolades after winning a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Games. Jessica Pascoe claimed victory in the women's 10-kilometre race, while Nathaniel Brisbane and Izzy Murphy triumphed in the men's and women's 5-kilometre races, respectively.
Event Details and Logistics
The Canberra Times marathon is scheduled to start at 6:15 am on Sunday, April 12, with road closures in the inner north and inner south from 3:30 am, some lasting until 3:00 pm. Organizers emphasize the well-planned nature of the event, which continues to attract runners like Bianca for its convenience and beautiful settings. "Even at sunrise, I think it's such a beautiful city to run races in," she remarked, praising the picturesque views around Lake Burley Griffin.
This festival not only promotes physical fitness but also strengthens community bonds, as seen through groups like Canberra Pinoy Runners and the supportive atmosphere among participants.
