Port Adelaide Star Zak Butters Fined $1500 for Umpire Abuse Charge

Port Adelaide superstar Zak Butters has been fined $1500 after the AFL Tribunal upheld a charge of abusive and insulting language toward umpire Nick Foot. The decision followed a lengthy hearing on Tuesday, where Butters contested the allegation arising from a disputed free kick during Sunday's loss to St Kilda.

Umpire's Testimony and Butters' Defense

Umpire Nick Foot testified that he was "100 per cent adamant" he heard Butters say, "how much are they paying you?" a comment he described as questioning his integrity. Foot, with a 15-year AFL career and no prior reports for abusive language, stated, "When your integrity is questioned, you don't forget those words that are said to you." Despite the close proximity of just 1 meter, the alleged remark was not captured on Foot's microphone, but he insisted, "It was loud enough for me to hear crystal clear."

In contrast, Butters maintained his innocence, asserting he said, "surely that's not a free kick," and later clarified his recollection from a post-game interview on Seven, where he had initially stated, "how is that a free kick?" The acting Port Adelaide captain expressed frustration, saying, "It hurts me because I know I didn't say it," and emphasized he was "100 per cent sure" of his version. He also noted he was unaware of Foot's outside employment with bookmaker Sportsbet.

Tribunal Proceedings and Supporting Evidence

The hearing lasted over two hours, with Port Adelaide's legal representative suggesting Foot may have misheard the comment. However, Foot strongly disagreed. Butters' long-time teammate Ollie Wines and Power football manager Ben Rutten provided evidence, with Wines being the closest player to the incident. AFL Tribunal chair Renee Enbom KC is set to deliver the reasons for the decision on Wednesday, as time ran out to meet the 5.45pm EST deadline on Tuesday.

Butters attended the hearing wearing a black T-shirt with the word 'Listen' written on it, symbolizing his stance on the matter. The fine underscores the AFL's strict stance on player conduct toward officials, highlighting ongoing tensions in the sport.
