West Coast Coach Maintains Faith in Starcevich Amid Injury Setback
West Coast Eagles coach Andrew McQualter continues to express unwavering confidence in Brandon Starcevich, asserting that the former Brisbane Lion will play a crucial role this season, even as the defender faces another extended period on the sidelines. Starcevich has been ruled out for an additional six to eight weeks due to recurring calf issues, compounding a pre-season knee injury that has limited his involvement since joining the Eagles.
Injury Woes Delay Starcevich's Debut
Brandon Starcevich, who was a high-profile signing for West Coast with a lucrative contract, has struggled to make an impact since his arrival. After a knee injury hampered his early pre-season preparations, successive calf injuries have further delayed his debut. McQualter acknowledged the setbacks, stating, "He had another incident on it a couple of weeks ago, so there's been a couple in a row now, and I think it's now just about building him back up." Given the time needed for recovery and likely WAFL conditioning, a mid-season return to AFL action appears to be the best-case scenario.
Long-Term Vision for Starcevich
Despite the immediate challenges, McQualter emphasized the long-term perspective, highlighting Starcevich's potential value to the team. "We've got him for the long term and we see him being a really important player for us for a long time," he said. "So it's a shame because he's such a good player; we'd love to have him out there now, but we're going to try and set him up for a great back half of the year." This optimism reflects the Eagles' commitment to integrating Starcevich into their defensive lineup once fully fit.
Eagles' Form and Upcoming Challenges
West Coast has shown promising form recently, with comeback victories over North Melbourne and Port Adelaide, reducing expectations of another wooden spoon finish. However, the team faces a significant test this Saturday against premiership contenders Sydney at Optus Stadium. The absence of key midfielders Elliot Yeo, sidelined with a groin injury for one to two weeks, and Deven Robertson, suspended for one week, will add pressure. This places additional responsibility on young star Harley Reid, who has been instrumental in the Eagles' strong early-season performances.
Injury Updates and Team Adjustments
In other team news, Elijah Hewett is a potential return after an unscathed WAFL appearance, while coach McQualter may consider giving No.1 draft pick Willem Duursma more midfield opportunities. Unfortunately, forward Jacob Newton is unlikely to play again this season after suffering a navicular fracture in his foot. McQualter expressed sympathy, noting, "I'm gutted for Jacob; he had one when he was 17 years old as well on the other foot. He'll most likely go away for surgery now and rebuild him back up."
Light-Hearted Banter Ahead of Sydney Clash
As Sydney prepares to welcome back Isaac Heeney from a hamstring injury, McQualter offered a humorous piece of advice to Swans coach Dean Cox. "I reckon it's not a bad idea if Coxy leaves him over in Sydney. It's a long trip over here to Perth," he joked, adding a light-hearted touch to the pre-match buildup. This banter underscores the competitive yet respectful nature of the upcoming fixture, as West Coast aims to build on their recent momentum despite injury setbacks.
