Sydney Swans Axe AFLW Coach Scott Gowans After Disappointing Season Finale
Sydney Swans axe AFLW coach Scott Gowans after poor season

The Sydney Swans have made the decisive move to part ways with AFLW senior coach Scott Gowans, effective immediately, following a disappointing conclusion to the 2024 season.

The club confirmed the departure on Monday, marking the end of Gowans' two-year tenure at the helm of the women's program. The decision comes after the Swans managed just one victory from their 10-game campaign, finishing 17th on the ladder.

Challenging Season Leads to Coaching Shake-up

Under Gowans' leadership, the Swans struggled to find consistent form throughout the 2024 AFLW season. The team's sole victory came against eventual wooden spooners West Coast in round six, providing a brief moment of celebration in an otherwise difficult campaign.

Swans executive general manager of football Charlie Gardiner acknowledged the challenging circumstances but emphasized the need for change. "While we understand the challenges we have faced, particularly with injuries to key players, we believe now is the right time for a new direction for our AFLW program," Gardiner stated.

Search for New Leadership Begins

The club has immediately commenced the search for a new senior coach to lead the AFLW program into the 2025 season. Assistant coaches including Nick Davis, who served as senior coach for the final two games, will continue in their roles during the transition period.

Gardiner expressed confidence in the team's foundation, noting: "We have a strong group of talented players and believe with the right leadership we can take significant steps forward in season 2025."

Gowans' Coaching Legacy

Scott Gowans originally joined the Swans ahead of their inaugural AFLW season in 2022, bringing extensive coaching experience from his time with North Melbourne and Carlton's women's programs. His departure marks another chapter in the evolving landscape of AFLW coaching appointments.

The Swans organization has committed to supporting players and staff through the transition as they prepare for what they hope will be a more competitive 2025 season.
