Port Adelaide Rejects Jaidyn Stephenson's AFL Comeback Bid
Former North Melbourne and Collingwood forward Jaidyn Stephenson will not be reviving his AFL career, as Port Adelaide has reportedly declined to offer him a list spot. The 27-year-old retired in 2024 after 122 games, citing a loss of passion for football, but made a surprising return to training with the Power late last year.
Stephenson's Failed Attempt at a Football Resurrection
Stephenson had been training with Port Adelaide in hopes of securing one of two available list spots, with a third opening up due to Ivan Soldo's ACL injury. Despite receiving a strong endorsement from teammate Mitch Georgiades, who praised his talent and seamless performance, Stephenson was not selected. He recently played in a reserve game against Adelaide, booting 2.4, but will not be offered a contract.
Remaining Contenders for Port Adelaide's List Spots
With Stephenson out of the running, the focus shifts to other candidates vying for Port Adelaide's remaining list positions. East Fremantle small forward Mitch Zadow, who kicked 18 goals in 14 games last season and impressed in the reserve match, is among the contenders. Former Geelong midfielder Ted Clohesy and Norwood defender Balyn O'Brien are also still in the mix, adding depth to the Power's selection process.
Jason Horne-Francis Cleared of Serious Injury
In positive news for Port Adelaide, scans have cleared former No.1 draft pick Jason Horne-Francis of any serious injury after he exited a trial match against Adelaide with foot soreness. This is the same foot he had surgery on last year, which limited him to just 15 games in 2025. Horne-Francis also missed internal match simulations due to a shoulder knock, but the all-clear has boosted optimism within the club.
Horne-Francis Eyes Strong Comeback Season
Port Adelaide remains hopeful that Horne-Francis will be available for their round 1 clash and could still feature in the AAMI Community Series match against West Coast next Sunday. Expressing confidence, Horne-Francis stated, "I definitely feel I can turn it around and have a good season still. My goal for this year is to get out there, be healthy and hopefully play as many games I can." This clearance marks a significant relief for the Power as they prepare for the upcoming AFL season.
