Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury has paid tribute to the club's passionate supporters after the Magpies survived a scare from the West Coast Eagles to secure a hard-fought victory at the MCG.
Speaking after the match, Pendlebury credited the crowd for providing the energy the team needed to overcome a determined Eagles outfit, which had threatened to pull off an upset.
Magpies overcome early Eagles surge
The Eagles started strongly, kicking the first two goals of the game and putting the Magpies under pressure. However, Collingwood gradually worked their way into the contest, with Pendlebury leading by example in the midfield.
The Magpies took control in the second quarter, booting five goals to one to establish a comfortable lead at halftime. Despite a late fightback from West Coast, Collingwood held on to win by 18 points.
Pendlebury's praise for the fans
Pendlebury said the crowd noise helped the team lift when the Eagles were pressing. "The fans were unbelievable today," he said. "When West Coast were coming at us, you could feel the energy from the stands. It really spurred us on."
The veteran midfielder finished with 28 disposals and a goal, earning him a place among the best players on the ground.
Eagles show promise despite loss
West Coast coach Adam Simpson said he was proud of his team's effort, particularly in the first quarter. "We came to play and showed some really good signs," Simpson said. "But Collingwood are a quality side and they took their chances when it mattered."
The Eagles remain in the bottom half of the ladder but have shown improvement in recent weeks. Young players like Harley Reid and Reuben Ginbey continue to impress.
Looking ahead
Collingwood will face a tough test next week when they take on the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. The Magpies will be hoping to build on their win and continue their push for a top-four finish.
For the Eagles, they return to Optus Stadium to host the Gold Coast Suns, with a chance to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
