Emotional Goal Serves as Poignant Tribute

In a moment that transcended sport, Carlton forward Mia Austin delivered an emotional tribute to her late cousin during the Blues' commanding AFLW finals victory over West Coast on Saturday. The powerful scene unfolded as Austin marked strongly and kicked truly on the three-quarter time siren, immediately breaking down in tears as every one of her teammates rushed to embrace her.

A Family's Tragic Loss

The celebration honoured Austin's 17-year-old cousin Ben, who tragically lost his life the previous week after being struck by a cricket ball while warming up for a T20 match. Speaking bravely to Channel 7 after the game, Austin explained the significance of her emotional response. "Early last week, my little cousin Benny passed away in a cricket incident," she shared. "My cousins and uncle are here today so that was just to honour him. I know if he was here today he would have absolutely loved it. A little tribute to him."

Dominant Victory Secures Semi-Final Berth

Beyond the touching personal moment, Carlton produced a formidable team performance under challenging conditions. The Blues booted six goals in a dominant third quarter to secure a comprehensive 9.6 (60) to 2.6 (18) victory against West Coast. The win was particularly notable given the wet and wild weather that tested both sides throughout the match.

Sophie McKay, daughter of Carlton great Andy McKay, stood out with two goals in a stunning individual performance. She was well supported by Erone Fitzpatrick and Dayna Finn, who also booted two goals each in the convincing team display.

For West Coast, their maiden finals appearance proved challenging. The Eagles failed to score in the opening quarter and, despite showing some resilience in the second term, their second-half capitulation will undoubtedly disappoint coach Daisy Pearce.

The victory sets up an exciting semi-final clash for Carlton, who will now face Hawthorn next week as they continue their pursuit of AFLW premiership glory.
