Kylie Minogue, Australia's princess of pop, has revealed she is 'so nervous' to perform at the AFL grand final this September. The AFL announced in March that Minogue would headline the 2026 decider, ending a years-long pursuit to book her for the league's showpiece event.
A Career Highlight
Speaking to Sunrise on Tuesday morning, the 57-year-old said the AFL grand final 'may be' the highlight of her decorated career. 'I'm so nervous, even just when you introduced it like that. It's going to be a moment,' she told Nat Barr.
Minogue has over four billion streams on Spotify, won several ARIA, Grammy and Brit awards, headlined Glastonbury and is one of Australia's greatest ever popstars. She has turned the AFL down several times when asked to perform at the grand final, and there had been a view that it was because she preferred to play her shows at night, which is impossible with a 2.30pm start time.
'Maybe it's like a period in my life where I'm like, why not?' the pop megastar added.
Upcoming Netflix Docuseries
It comes as Netflix is set to air a three-part docuseries on the rollercoaster life and career of Minogue. 'With the documentary, with the AFL, you know, I've been asked for years and years to do a documentary. I've been asked for years to do AFL and if not now, when? So I am excited,' she said.
'There's a lot to do. And I don't know how to prepare myself for 90,000-plus people in Melbourne at the centre of the MCG on grand final day. It's going to be big. Big breaths. Can't wait.'
She admitted the process to put the documentary together was an emotional one. 'I was literally in the edit suite, on the edge of my seat, then the tears came, then the, like, guffaw, belly laughs. It's a ride,' Minogue said. 'So it was kind of odd and amazing doing it, and also odd and amazing watching it.'
