Hawks 'extremely disappointed' as AFL ends Tasmania deal

Hawthorn Football Club has expressed its deep disappointment over the AFL's decision to terminate their long-standing partnership with Tasmania, paving the way for the new Tasmania Devils team to become the state's primary AFL focus from 2028.

The Hawks have played home games in Launceston since 2001 under a lucrative agreement with the Tasmanian government. They had hoped to continue this arrangement even after the state was granted its own AFL license for a team entering the competition in 2028.

However, the AFL confirmed on Tuesday that Hawthorn will "transition out" of Tasmania after the 2027 season, allowing the Devils to take centre stage in the state's football landscape.

Club's official response

"Hawthorn Football Club is extremely disappointed in the AFL's decision to force an end to our relationship with Launceston and Northern Tasmania post-2027," the Hawks said in a statement.

"The club put forward a strong argument that it should continue to play games in Launceston into the future."

The statement highlighted the club's significant contributions to Tasmanian football over the past 25 years, including economic benefits, strong attendance, and a loyal member base.

"Our removal will have a material impact on the club, both on and off the field," the statement added.

AFL's rationale

AFL chief operating officer Tom Harley acknowledged the long and successful partnership between Hawthorn and Tasmania, but emphasised the need for the Devils to have space to thrive.

"The AFL acknowledges and thanks the Hawthorn Football Club for its outstanding contribution to footy in Tasmania, and for the role it has played in growing the game and building connection with the Tasmanian and Launceston communities," Harley said.

"With the Tasmania Devils entering the AFL competition in 2028, it is appropriate that the Devils become the primary focus for football in the state, giving Tasmanians their own team to support on the national stage."

Impact on Hawthorn

Hawthorn will continue to play home games in Launceston through the 2027 season. This year, they are scheduled to play four games at UTAS Stadium, with the second match coming on Thursday night against Adelaide.

The Hawks boast an impressive record at the venue, with a 76% winning rate, including 66 victories in 87 appearances and a draw with GWS in 2017. Under coach Sam Mitchell, the team is currently on an 11-match winning streak at the ground, remaining unbeaten there for over three years.

Comparison with North Melbourne

North Melbourne had a similar arrangement with Tasmania in Hobart, which ended after the 2025 season. The Kangaroos played 41 home games at Bellerive Oval from 2012 and now host multiple matches each season in Western Australia under a deal with the WA state government.

The AFL's decision marks the end of a significant era for Hawthorn in Tasmania, as the club now looks to adjust its future home game schedule without the Launceston fixture.
