Essendon President Andrew Welsh Performs Dramatic Citizen's Arrest on Gold Coast
In a remarkable turn of events, Essendon president Andrew Welsh executed a citizen's arrest on Friday night on the Gold Coast, mere hours before the club's highly anticipated AFL clash with the Suns. The incident unfolded in Broadbeach, where Welsh was dining with Essendon CEO Tim Roberts and club sponsors.
Chaotic Scene Unfolds on Surf Parade
According to reports, a car ploughed through a bus stop on the bustling Surf Parade strip around 7:30 PM. Welsh rushed to the scene to assess the damage and check for potential injuries among onlookers. Upon arrival, he discovered a single-car crash involving a utility vehicle that had smashed into a light pole.
Witnesses described the scene as extremely chaotic, with the driver attempting to break free from the car and flee. Without hesitation, Welsh grabbed the driver and tackled him to the ground. With assistance from another bystander, the pair pinned the male to the pavement in front of stunned spectators until police arrived.
Swift Police Response and Aftermath
Police arrived within minutes, handcuffing the man and placing him in the back of a police van. Paramedics treated him at the scene. A witness expressed amazement, stating, "How no one was in the path of the ute blows my mind," highlighting the potential danger of the crash.
Andrew Welsh, a respected property developer, played 162 games for the Bombers between 2002 and 2011. He joined the Essendon board in 2022 and was appointed president of the club in September last year.
