West Coast Eagles utility Jack Hutchinson is set to play his first game of the season this weekend after recovering from ankle surgery. The versatile 23-year-old has been named in the Eagles' squad to face Port Adelaide on Sunday at Adelaide Oval, providing a timely boost to the team's forward line.
Injury Recovery
Hutchinson underwent surgery on his right ankle during the pre-season after sustaining the injury at training. The procedure kept him sidelined for the opening rounds of the 2023 AFL season, but he has now been cleared to return. Eagles coach Adam Simpson confirmed Hutchinson's availability, stating that the young forward has impressed with his rehabilitation and training form.
Versatility Key
Hutchinson, who was drafted by West Coast in the 2021 mid-season rookie draft, has shown he can play multiple roles across the forward line and through the midfield. His ability to apply pressure inside 50 and hit the scoreboard will be valuable for the Eagles, who have struggled for consistency in attack this season.
In his 10 AFL games to date, Hutchinson has booted eight goals and averaged nearly four tackles per game. His return adds depth to a forward line that has relied heavily on veterans Jack Darling and Jamie Cripps.
Team Changes
Hutchinson is one of several changes for the Eagles, who are looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss to Gold Coast last week. The club has also recalled defender Tom Barrass and midfielder Luke Edwards, while ruckman Bailey Williams has been omitted.
Port Adelaide, meanwhile, will be without star midfielder Travis Boak due to concussion, but welcome back captain Tom Jonas from suspension.
Opportunity for Hutchinson
For Hutchinson, this weekend represents a chance to cement his spot in the best 22. With the Eagles in a rebuilding phase, the club is keen to give opportunities to younger players. Hutchinson's work ethic and versatility have impressed the coaching staff, and he will be eager to make an impact.
“Jack has done everything right in his recovery,” Simpson said. “He’s a hard worker and we know he can play a role for us. It’s good to have him back out there.”
The Eagles will be hoping Hutchinson's return can spark a turnaround in form as they look to climb off the bottom of the ladder.
