Western Derby Commentary Team Delivers Massive Ratings Win for Seven in WA
A star-studded commentary team featuring western derby greats has secured a significant ratings victory for Seven, with the premier football clash in Western Australia attracting more than 443,000 viewers across the state. Led by 7News' Ryan Daniels, the Perth-based lineup included Fremantle icons Michael 'Sonny' Walters and Shaun McManus, alongside West Coast champions Ben Cousins and Mark LeCras, who provided live coverage from Optus Stadium on Sunday.
Their unparalleled insights and deep local knowledge contributed to a total television audience of 201,000 in WA, supplemented by 30,000 viewers on 7Plus Sport. This represents a substantial 20 per cent year-on-year increase in audience numbers, making it the most-watched derby since round three of 2022. The broadcast also featured post-match presentations, where Fremantle defender Jordan Clark was awarded the Glendinning-Allan Medal for best on ground in the Dockers' 56-point triumph.
Authentic Local Connection Resonates with Audiences
Maryna Fewster, chief executive of Seven West Media WA, highlighted the impact of the commentary team's local expertise. "The WA footy DNA in the commentary box was unmistakable, creating an authentic call that clearly resonated with audiences," she said. "We're proud to offer that local connection and provide advertising partners with a powerful way to reach passionate local footy fans."
Seven's coverage of the 2026 AFL season continues to demonstrate robust audience growth across all platforms. Total TV audiences have surged by 24 per cent, driven by a 12 per cent increase on traditional broadcast and an impressive 170 per cent rise on 7Plus Sport. This upward trend is anticipated to persist into round seven, highlighted by the highly anticipated 2026 Anzac Day match between Collingwood and Essendon, which will be broadcast live and free on Seven, 7mate, and 7Plus Sport from the MCG.
The success underscores the enduring appeal of local football content and Seven's strategic focus on leveraging homegrown talent to engage viewers. As the season progresses, the network aims to build on this momentum, offering fans comprehensive coverage and exclusive insights into the sport they love.
