Collingwood's Injury Woes Ease as Stars Return for Dockers Clash
Collingwood Football Club has received a significant boost ahead of their Friday night encounter with Fremantle, with linchpins Nick Daicos and Scott Pendlebury cleared to return from injury. The Magpies will also welcome debutant Angus Anderson to the AFL stage for this crucial Adelaide Oval fixture.
Fitness Tests Passed After Injury Setbacks
Daicos missed Collingwood's heavy 54-point loss to Brisbane last week due to a calf injury, while Pendlebury was sidelined from that away fixture with an Achilles issue. Both players have now successfully proven their fitness during training this week.
"Nick will play and so will Pendles, they did what they needed to do to get through this week," Collingwood coach Craig McRae confirmed to reporters on Wednesday. "Our performance was really down but Brisbane were amazing. Watching back on the tape, the stuff they were doing - woah, that's another level."
Debutant Anderson Brings Toughness to Midfield
The match will mark the AFL debut of 22-year-old midfielder Angus Anderson, who was recruited with pick 57 at last November's draft from SANFL club Sturt. Anderson grew up in Sawtell, near Coffs Harbour in northern NSW, and was best-afield in Sturt's premiership last year.
McRae described Anderson as "tough" and predicted fans would appreciate his playing style. "The fans will love his tackle intensity. Every time we show some highlights in the VFL, he's really smashing in and hurting the opposition. His contest and clearance stuff is his strength and we play against an opposition that is number one in the competition for those parts of the game."
Ladder Position and Scoring Struggles
The Pies currently sit in 10th spot with two wins and two losses, while they face in-form Fremantle who occupy fourth position with three wins and one loss. Collingwood's offensive struggles have drawn attention, with the team ranking fifth-lowest for scoring this season - above only the bottom four clubs: Richmond, Essendon, GWS, and Carlton.
Some analysts have pointed to Collingwood's failure to retain renowned goalkicker Brody Mihocek as contributing to their scoring difficulties. Mihocek joined Melbourne on a longer-term deal than what the Magpies were offering.
"I love Checkers (Mihocek) and I watched Melbourne play the last couple of rounds; God, they're playing some exciting footy," McRae acknowledged. "I don't do contracts. I haven't done one contract and I wouldn't even know what he was offered or how long it was, it's not my job. You want to see players get the best out of themselves. It was sad to see him go, we all had great relationships with him."
Focus on Improvement After Brisbane Loss
McRae emphasized that his sole focus remains on rebounding from the disappointing performance against Brisbane. "So we have got work to do. And I would rather be finding these lessons out in round four than in round 20."
The return of Daicos and Pendlebury provides Collingwood with much-needed experience and skill as they attempt to improve their attacking output against a formidable Fremantle side. The Friday night clash promises to be a significant test for both teams as they continue their 2024 AFL campaigns.
