Carlton Defender Jacob Weitering on Track for Opening Round Despite Injury Scare
Carlton Blues vice-captain Jacob Weitering has received a positive update on his health, with the club indicating he is a "good chance" to play in the opening round of the AFL season. This news comes after a concerning incident during the State of Origin match, where Weitering was involved in a heavy collision.
Injury Details and Hospital Visit
During the first quarter of the State of Origin game, Weitering, a key defender for Victoria, was crunched in a marking contest with Western Australia forward Mitch Georgiades. The 204-game veteran was stretchered off the field and immediately taken to hospital for urgent scans. Fortunately, medical examinations cleared him of any serious injuries to his neck, spine, or major internal organs.
After being released from hospital on Sunday morning, Weitering flew back to Melbourne. Further assessments at the Carlton club confirmed that he had sustained a rib fracture, but no other significant damage was found.
Club Statement and Recovery Timeline
In an official statement, Carlton expressed optimism about Weitering's availability for their opening round clash against Sydney on March 5. "The defender has been cleared of any other injury. As a result, he remains a good chance to be available to play in Opening Round," the club said.
The statement added that the 28-year-old will now focus on a full recovery, with his final availability to be confirmed during the week leading up to the match. This development is a relief for the Blues, as Weitering is a crucial part of their defensive lineup.
Weitering's Perspective and Other Injuries
Despite the scare, Weitering has no regrets about participating in the State of Origin game. "Not at all, absolutely loved the week," he said on Sunday. "The result went our way as well. I kept up with the scores in hospital. I would certainly do it again if I got the opportunity."
The match also saw other players sidelined due to injuries. Port Adelaide forward Mitch Georgiades, along with Adelaide recruit Callum Ah Chee and GWS defender Sam Taylor, were unable to finish the game because of 'hamstring awareness'. Additionally, Gold Coast's Brownlow medallist Matt Rowell sustained a finger injury during the contest.
As the AFL season approaches, Carlton fans will be closely monitoring Weitering's progress, hoping he can make a swift return to bolster the team's defense against Sydney.
