Man Utd agree £35m deal for Éderson

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Brazilian midfielder Éderson for an initial €40.5 million (£35 million). The 26-year-old is set to become the first signing of Michael Carrick's tenure as the permanent manager at Old Trafford.

Deal Details and Medical

The total package could rise to €45 million (£38.8 million) with add-ons. Personal terms have been agreed on a contract that will run until June 2030, with an option to extend for a further 12 months. Although the summer transfer window opens on 15 June, the transfer is likely to be completed early next month, as the player has yet to undergo a medical. Éderson's contract with the Italian club had only one year remaining.

The Guardian first revealed United's interest in the midfielder back in April. Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox identified Éderson as a replacement for Casemiro, who has now left the club after his contract expired.

Playing Style and Background

Éderson's primary position is as a holding midfielder, but he possesses the dynamism to make runs from box to box, along with an ability to read the game and disrupt opposition attacks. His arrival could impact Manuel Ugarte, another defensive midfielder who rarely featured last season. Ugarte, who joined United for £51 million from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024, may be sold or loaned out.

Turning 27 next month, Éderson was included in Carlo Ancelotti's initial 55-man squad ahead of the World Cup but was ultimately not selected for the tournament by the Brazil head coach. He joined Atalanta in January 2022 from Salernitana, having previously played for Cruzeiro, Corinthians, and Fortaleza in his homeland. After making his Brazil debut in a friendly against Mexico in June 2024, he has earned three caps, the most recent coming in a 4-1 loss to Argentina in March 2025.

Further Midfield Targets

Carrick is intent on signing two new midfielders this summer. Other names on United's list include Real Madrid's Aurélien Tchouaméni, who would cost around £70 million; Brighton's Carlos Baleba, valued at £50 million; Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, who would cost at least £60 million; and Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, who may be priced at a minimum £100 million and is believed to favour a move to Manchester City.
